What’s in a name?

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

We are not talking Shakespeare here.

Anytime we make a choice, we inadvertently, open the door to criticism.

While choosing our name it was pretty evident that there are distinct perspectives when it comes to Neurodiversity, so let's talk about it

We want to address the three of them. First is how it pathologizes human brains that diverge from those considered “typical”. Then opposing views between deficit-as-difference versus disabled and the social model of disability describes one in which a disability arises out of societal barriers interacting with individual differences, as opposed to the medical model of disability, which is based on a biomedical perception of disability

Why Neurodiversity Coalition Network

Our name was chosen for the following reasons. Neurodiversity was chosen to reference variations in the human brain and cognition. Coalition was chosen because we believe in action and Network speaks to how we are all connected in this journey and the power of working towards the collective good.

Our model

We were built on the understanding that we are all different, which extends beyond brain functions. How we choose to navigate life is up to each of us and while we do not believe neurodiversity requires a cure, our goal at Neurodiversity Coalition Network is to offer resources that can help you thrive, while creating safe spaces for all.

As you interact with our posts and the community, we ask that you lead with curiosity, show empathy, and extend grace. We encourage open and honest conversation with the goal of understanding, should you find yourself unable to follow these guidelines, we respectfully ask that you take what adds value to you, without joining the conversation.

Until next time, J
